Why player development is very important for athletes

Guidance and mentoring can make or break someone. If someone shows promise and potential but grows in up an environment that could offer him the opposite, there is a likelihood that they may not come to hone that potential. Aside from physical nourishment, in the form of food, mental and psychological nourishment can help a child grow into the best that he can be. The same applies to sports, and mentors are not just restricted to our parents or relatives. Coaches, trainers, and many more sports authorities can act as guardians for every athlete with budding potential. In sports, this realm is more commonly known as player development and has been present in different sports, from basketball to soccer.

Player development is important because it allows young athletes to have an idea of the paths that they should tread and paths that they should not tread. It can be crucial sometimes for a coach to lead his players away from negative influences, be it in the form of drugs, alcohol, and many other vices as much as possible. Not only that, but academics and athletics go hand in hand as well. This is why most famous universities and colleges known for their athletic programs also have cookie-cutter academic consultancy programs for their student-athletes. This is to ensure that they also are excelling both on and off the field.

To bring it to the context of soccer, an individual with great knowledge in player development will know which role will suit each player. If a person is gifted with physical skills such as speed or coordination, a player development coach can devise programs to take that athlete’s skill to the next level, in the forms of training programs and one-on-one coaching. If you’re aware of the many great teams in soccer, you would know that some of them have the best youth development academies/programs in history. One example would be the youth of Manchester United FC in the late 80s, known as Fergie’s Fledglings who would then go on to become legends of their club. Another one would be the La Masia Academy of FC Barcelona, responsible for building the careers of players such as Xavi Hernandez, Andres Iniesta, Pep Guardiola, Carles Puyol, who have become great Barcelona players and coaches.

Player development is also crucial in making athletes better people (bold) overall. Not only do they ensure that these athletes strive to be the best they can be in their respective sports, but the best player development personnel must also ensure that they become better human beings in the long run. Teaching them values of sportsmanship, fair play, guidance on knowing how to win and lose gracefully will lead them into a path of a fruitful and well-respected life.

ETA Sports firmly believes in player development. We offer services that will ensure that our athletes, no matter how old or young will be able to make the best decisions for their playing and post-playing careers. Our programs aim to give our athletes a shot at making their football dreams come into fruition. We want to make the most of what they do on and off the pitch, and in turn make them better athletes and brighter individuals.
